The Trufferies
The “Needlesdale” trufferie is located 9km west of the township of Deloraine, nestled under the Great Western Tiers, in the central north of Tasmania. There are already 12 hectares of established trufferie on the property, with a further 38 hectares to develop this season.
“Needlesdale” is only 2km away from “Askrigg”, the property that grew Australia's first black truffle in 1999. “Askrigg” has been producing each year since then under the same management regime that will be adopted on “Needlesdale”. The trufferies slope predominantly to the north east, with an average rainfall of 1000mm per year. The soil is rich and volcanic, and has a gently undulating topography. These aspects allow for good water drainage and aerated soils. There are two water storage areas providing an ample supply. Tasmanian Truffle Enterprises Ltd has proven by its research with Serve-Ag and Aus Industry that sufficient water is essential to truffle production. Where are the trufferies? The trufferies are situated in the central north of Tasmania, about 8km west of the township of Deloraine, one of the prettiest towns in the prettiest state of Australia. The trufferies are quarantine areas and strict control over visitors is enforced to ensure that any potential competing fungi are not introduced to the trufferie.
