Questions that must be asked

Growing truffles is not a get rich quick scheme, just ask any Frenchman or for that matter any Australian or New Zealand grower that has been in the industry for some time. Growing truffles should be considered a long term investment that will pay good dividends down the track if you do the right thing and take care of your plantation details.

My best advice to any would-be growers is to seriously investigate who you are purchasing trees from. Ask a long list of questions before outlaying any money.

Here are some key questions that you need answered:
  • Has the tree Marketer ever grown a black truffle personally?

  • What practical experience do they have?

  • Do they have their own plantation you can visit and ask questions? If not, how on earth can they know how to manage yours on a daily basis over the phone!

  • Have they done any research in Australian soils and water and produced truffles in Australian soils? Without this knowledge, how can they possibly give advice on irrigation scheduling or soil correction?

  • Do they have an industry standard approved nursery?

  • Are they charging you top dollar for their trees? What sort of support do they offer for this price?

  • Do they charge for consultancy every time you talk to them or they visit you?

  • Do they want you to pay all the money for trees, advice etc, tying up your land in a contract that leaves them risk-free, while promising the earth for a percentage of your crop?!?

  • How realistic are the projected returns? Don’t be fooled by big numbers and glamorous spreadsheets - check out the actual market prices for truffles for yourself. Go to info@geofoods.it each week, and see for yourself the real market prices. To get the farm gate price deduct another 15-20% from what you see here.

  • Ask to talk to some of their growers who have actually produced those forecasted figures. Talk to as many as you can – really research the industry and who you are about to camp with. If they can’t (or won’t) give you any contacts, run for your life!

As someone who has been in the industry here in Australia since 1994 I am keen to see it grow and prosper, creating fabulous opportunities for those who have invested.

It is a very exciting industry to be in, and after our earlier “learning years” we have most of the bugs out of the growing procedure, making now a very good time to enter the market. Growers have a fabulous opportunity to be part of this vibrant industry, just please go in with your eyes open!!

At Truffles Australis, WE DO NOT CHARGE any consulting fees; all we do is charge you for the trees themselves. When you purchase trees through our company, we will assist you with all the growing information that you require, including irrigation design criteria, fencing design, and of course soil rectification work based on 15 years experience in the industry in Australia. We will then help you at any stage into the future to assist you in any way we can, whether it is dog training, marketing, grading or packaging etc. We are currently marketing other growers’ truffles who requested our assistance and we anticipate this to continue into the future. We do not have contracts with any of those growers, just a solid working understanding. As growers ourselves, we want the industry to grow and prosper and you as a grower are more than welcome to visit our operation at any time and we will show you from the start to finish.
